"We will be commemorating the Nakba in Gaza"
Why the boat "Free Gaza" will not sail this summer, but next spring

The Break the Siege International Initiative has changed the date of the boat trip to Gaza to the spring of 2008 instead of the summer 2007.
All of us supporting this initiative want it to be successful, and we did not want to go prematurely just to "stick to the schedule". Three main reasons for the change of schedule are highlighted in this release.
1. Because the Israeli military sabotaged the Palestinian boat trip in 1988, coercing the boat owner to withdraw at the last minute, we decided the only way to make this initiative work was to buy our own boats. Buying two or three boats will cost close to $ 250,000. Once that decision was made in May, we raised close to $ 30,000. Giving us the extra six months ensures we will collect the full amount.
2. Many of the logistics, such as registering the boat, getting insurance for the trip and being able to find a committed captain and crew are more complicated than we initially thought, and we don't want to put the people onboard in jeopardy.
3. Finally, rescheduling the trip to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Nakba is will highlight the emergence of another Nakba; the one of the besieged people of Gaza.
Our postponement is by no means a political one. Our only comment to the recent developments in the Gaza Strip is that we acknowledge the freedom of the peoples of the world to choose and elect the government of their will, and not ones imposed to them by force, or starvation.

We are fully aware that the siege of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip will not have come to an end by next spring. The aerial, ground and naval borders will be still under Israeli control, and our project will be just as vital then.

Porque el barco "Free Gaza" no zarpara este verano, sino la primavera proxima

La Iniciativa Internacional de Romper el Cerco ha cambiado la fecha de la travesia maritima a Gaza a la primavera de 2008 en lugar del verano 2007.
Todos y todas quienes apoyamos esta iniciativa queremos que tenga exito, y no queriamos ir prematuramente solo para "cumplir con el programa". En este comunicado, debemos destacar tres razones principales para el cambio de fechas.
1. Como los militares Israelies sabotearon la travesia maritima a Palestina en 1988, coaccionando al propietario del buque a retirarse en el ultimo minuto, hemos decidido que el unico modo de llevar a cabo esta iniciativa era comprando nuestros propios barcos. Comprar dos o tres barcos costara aproximadamente 250.000 $. Cuando se tomó la decision en Mayo, recogimos casi 30.000 $. Teniendo seis meses mas, nos aseguramos de tener el importe total.
2.Mucha parte logistica, tal como registrar el barco, contratar el seguro de la travesia y encontrar un capitan y una tripulacion comprometidos es más complicado de lo que pensabamos en principio, y no queremos poner en peligro la integridad de quienes se embarquen.
3. Finalmente, cambiar la fecha de la travesia para que coincida con el 60º aniversario de la "Nakba" (catastrofe) pondra de relieve el peligro que hay de otra Nakba; la de la población sitiada de Gaza.
Nuestro aplazamiento de ningun modo tiene un sentido politico. Nuestro unico comentario a los ultimos acontecimientos en la Franja de Gaza es que aceptamos la libertad de los pueblos del mundo a escoger y votar el gobierno que quieran, y no los que se les impongan por fuerza, o haciendoles morir de hambre.

Estamos plenamente convencidos que el asedio de la poblacion Palestina en la Franja de Gaza no habra terminado a finales de la primavera proxima. Las fronteras aereas, terrestres y navales todavía estaran bajo control Israeli, y nuestro proyecto continuara siendo vital para entonces.
