Hugh graduated from Queen Margaret University College with an Honours Degree in Communication and has worked in the retail and property sectors, as a community care professional and as a college lecturer before being drawn to Holyrood.
Hugh has been involved with the Liberal Democrats for many years, standing for Westminster, Holyrood and councils in various areas before successfully being elected as MSP for the Central Scotland region. He also been a member of both the Scottish and federal policy committees and has held the position of vice convenor and treasurer of the Central Scotland Liberal Democrats.
He was one of only eight Scots chosen by the United Nations to supervise the first-ever free elections in the former Yugoslavian province of Kosovo in 2001.
